I am reviewing one of my recent read today, The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up : The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing by Marie Kondo.

So let’s begin with how I got into choosing the book really :

For one, I love tidying up. Though I must admit I have a very messy home at time, I do enjoy tidying up and love the feel of satisfaction when I do them.

Number 2 : This book has literally been everywhere in the social media – so I really do want to check out what the rave is “al ’bout”!

Number 3 : I have recently caught another addiction : AUDIO BOOK!!! OMG, really, why didn’t I try it sooner! I downloaded the Audible apps onto my phone and I am listening to it like crazy ! While I do not read a lot of novel, I do love motivational books and have been going through two -three books in a month – which is very rare for me as sometimes I feel like it is so hard to find my sit down time to read. With audible, I can listen to books while I do houseworks , while I sew and while in the bath which is awesome!!! I also find that I rarely read book twice and after listening to this book I am about to review here – it was definitely a great choice to go Audible instead!

So, here is my honest review :

Marie Kondo The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up Book Review

The book is short, simple, put for an easy read. The audible was read fine too. I finished the audible in two late afternoon. I love the way the book was put for you to evaluate after each chapters, do a bit of exercise and let you think about your possessions and the way they bring you joy. I went through some amount of cleaning which I have had many of those before too, but this time I did it with more joy and more with real intention.

The book also have some tips on how to organize things, how to make things more accessible and all which is described well even in the audio book. I am not sure whether there is any images in the real book, but I did manage to understand the method either way.

To me the title does sure serve its purpose, I did feel enlighten after all the cleaning. I feel more in charge and things were much easier to keep up with. So there is magic in tidying up!

One sentence that really stuck to me after reading this and will be everytime I pick something up around the house : do this thing bring me joy? Has it served its purpose? and the answer to this will then determine whether the item is worth keeping.

However, there are some parts where I was like “really ?” I don’t think I want to be that OCD – or parts where I was like, I think I have better things to worry about than that. So, I will take some of the great from the book, and let myself be with my own way of tidying up for some things.

So in summary, I would give it a 4.5 star! and I would definitely recommend the book for those who wants to really do keep up with tidying up. As I have transformed a lot I would say, and things have gotten in place more that not these days!

You can purchase this book from amazon here.

Well, what is your recent read? I’d love to hear – I am all about finding new books to listen to on my audible these days!

  1. I picked this book up too because of the buzz it’s been getting on the internet, and I completely agree with your points 🙂 a few things really resonated with me, but there were others (like cleaning out your purse at the end of every day, and thanking your socks for a job well done…) that I was like really, REALLY?! Some organizing books that I’ve found much more helpful: The Joy of Less by Francine Jay and Clear Your Clutter with Feng Shui by Karen Kingston.
