Hi!

I am back here in Canberra! We reached here safely last Monday. I already got myself back to the office and I am back on track. (for those who doesn’t know : I went back to Malaysia, my home country for three weeks as a break from my studies, my husband Master’s convocation and to see friends and families)

The first few days of our holiday – we were busy with my hubby Master’s Convocation ;

convo msc hubby

Then, there is a lot of travelling.. though I must say, there are some free time during weekdays (since most friends are only available on weekends)..

Here is a quick visit to Steel Mosque at Putrajaya : love the pattern there -potential quilt block =)

Well, at first I thought I would post few updates during my holiday but I guess I was not into posting anything. In fact, I must say I was not at all productive  on holiday..LOL.

Why didn’t I post really??Well,
There is something about guilt that I can’t avoid. As a student, I always fail to have a really good time on holiday. Its the GUILT. The GUILT of not reading or thinking about your PhD project. The GUILT that kills my creativity, my relaxation and my need to sew. I have to say that, I am only best when I am busy. I see myself best at home when I do best in school. I feel relieved and relaxed when I have done I am suppose to : which means, I can then focus on my hobbies like sewing or home stuff like cleaning. I fear of doing anything when I am not doing my PhD things.

(photo : Beach walk at Tanjung Balau, Johor Malaysia – crabby prints : great quilting inspiration)

I was determined not to do anything PhD related on holiday. But that does not mean I did anything sewing related either. I still have that GUILT! Can you believe it.. but then again, there was not much time either.. Hey, It was a holiday —so, I did spend most of my time having fun outing with families. But in between those times, free times was only wasted on pinterest and browsing over the internet. No sewing. No PhD. So I do feel a bit of waste. But can I say I can’t handle it.. LOL.. and it kind of makes me want to end the holiday as soon as possible. I want to get back on track. Back to school and back to my sewing machine. Is it a bad feeling?

BUT…. I did a little bit of sewing. A bit of sewing to influence my mum and mother in law to do some patchwork too! So I went shopping around here to find quilty stuff. But it was hard to find quilty goodness here.. but I did find some great things here: If you are in Malaysia , and looking for some places to buy quilty things try this :

1 : Anna Patchwork House (Kota Damansara, Selangor)

I bought from her two sets of these rotary cutter sets for my mother in law and my mum.

New Stuff for My MIL and My mum

The fabrics on the mats were from fabricfanatics.

2 : Fabric Fanatics (The Summit, USJ)

I went a bit crazy with scrappy linen at the fabricfanatics shop. You can also purchase online from them.

This shop is fabulous! I met with the owner, Kelly..and she is wonderful.. I’ll definitely would be coming back. For those international buyers, you can also buy from her shop on etsy here.

I made these pouches with scrappy linen I bought. These pouches were made using the quilt as you go method.

3: Harris Bookstore (Aeon Shopping Centre, Tebrau, Johor)

I bought japanese patchwork, bags and quilt book here. There are lots of choices and they even sell Cotton Life magazines. Great place for japanese craft book.

4. Kims Button (previously JBF Sewing) (Taman Ungku Tun Aminah, Johor)

Now, this is my regular sewing shop when I am in Malaysia. I use to do a lot of beading embroidery and this shops stocks a lot of beads that I need and use. I love their customer service and I love their little tidy shop.
They stock on good quality sewing/needlework related stuff and much to my surprise, now they also stock on a lot of quilty stuff like cotton fabrics, battings, threads and even rotary cutters and mats!

I stocked up on zippers for bags and bought some batting for my mum here.

Well, that’s it for this post..I think its lengthy enough.. i have a lot more to share in this few days, so please bear with me..

Lots of love and misses,

Hi!

I have been hopping around and found that many bloggers are off to Sewing Summit soon.. Its great to see so many travelling inspiration at Travel Handmade Flickr Group too.

I too will be travelling tomorrow..but not to Sewing Summit, Alas..but I am travelling back to my Mum in Malaysia! Fun eitherway..

I was greatly inspired by all the handmade travelling things I see around.. but I don’t have a sewing machine to do any last minute sewing! I really wish I could just sew up a passport holder.. Will I have the time to handsew it tonight? Yikes.. probably no.. but who knows…

So I can’t show you much now..I am just doing a little prep for my on the go project : my EPPs… so that is currently my W.I.P.

travelling with hexies..

Included there are some paper piecing project I plan to link up on the 30th November over at the Travelling PicStitch hosted by Quokka Quilt.

And here are the full fabric choice for my Travelling PicStitch. The photo was taken at Floriade 2012, Canberra. (Its spring over here down under and Floriade is held in Canberra every year- so this is our annual activity for sure)

And I also reorganized my sewing space. So I guess I can show you where I sew..

And I organized my scrap stash by colour too..

Well I really hope my sewing machine would be ready once we are back in Canberra. Till then, I am off to have fun on my travel!

BTW, If you have a minute, I’d love if you could fill this poll too! You can tick more than one… I love to know what you like!Thank You!!!

XOXO,

So, without my sewing machine, I guess there is no reason for me to procrastinate on trying English Paper Piecing (EPP ) that have been long in my wish of to do list…

I am using my current favourite fabric line : Field Study by Anna Maria Horner..

So here is my very First Sexy Hexy Flower!!!
turned into a pincushion…

Hexagon English Paper Pieced Pincushion

Hexie Flower Pin Cushion

Yes, not that neat, but hey, I am embracing progress and the JOY of making.

And as some people say.. It is kinda addictive… and I believe its true…
I even sew some in the car today. I even made some with a little bit of fussy cutting…

Fussy Cutting in the car

Isn’t it fun!! so portable and makes the perfect on the go projects. I am in LOVE!

My first several hexagon flowers were done differently just to see which one I feel comfortable with.
I ended up with not basting together with paper (just making a small stitches at the corner),
I use any plain paper or magazine paper.. but i think using a freezer paper is not bad too especially if you have a die cutter. Since I don’t have one yet, I’ll stick to cutting the templates slowly and precisely or maybe buy some precut one too.. and whip stitch the hexies together..

Well till then,
Have a fun week!

Hi!

Since my machine is in service, I guess I had to go ahead and sew by hand my challenge to sew what I have pinned on my Pinterest Board Pin It Sew It..

I have been meaning to make this cute house ornament / pin cushion like forever.. There is a tutorial for this over at Retro-Mama. So go ahead make one,or two.. or more.. they are kind of addictive.. I bet I would have made more if I have a sewing machine..I’m a bit rusty already with my hand sewing..so I stopped at one. But they turn out cute.. I love it!

It was also just the perfect project..as I will be back home in Malaysia for a holiday. (I still call my Mum’s home as the real “home”)

I will try EPP over the weekend, but now I am reorganizing my stash and my sewing corner..Will be sharing soon..

Hi!

Well, one of the reason I don’t wanna start any big project this week is because I have this to get done!

Irish Chain 85% done

I wanna finish quilting this.. It is almost done except that it has quite a large border which got me thinking how am I to quilt it?with pebbles too? You can see below in my machine – the white plain border..

I better start thinking and get moving on this.. I do hope to get it done soon..I don’t wanna quilt other quilt top yet until I finish this. And I wish I could finish it by 11th October.

Borrowing computer table for quilting..

Well, after quite a lot of finish last September, I’d slow down this October as we will be travelling back to Malaysia for a 3 week holiday!! Yeay.. I miss home so much.

Today I am linking up to W.I.P Wednesday at Freshly Pieced. Today is hosted by Debbie from A Quilter’s Table.

By the way, chance to enter my little giveaway is still on here!

Well, till then,
XOXO

Lilys QuiltsHi!

Finally I am done with my Jack Attack quilt top! If you want to make one, come and join.. Great tutorial here at Lily’s Quilt.

Guess what?.. it’s my biggest quilt so far (well not exactly done yet -but quilt top is done..LOL). This is my third quilt top finished ever since I learned how to quilt…

so I am feeling pretty good.. ehem.. please pardon me 😛

My Jack Attack quilt top measures 68 x 95″

Not such a good photo – it is too big for our little apartment floor.. I’ll definitely will be taking it outdoor once it is quilted and bound.

Another thing to share… Lately I have been wasting a lot of thread as I have not used the chain piecing method for this Jack.. it requires more thinking and placing before you can just sew it up..

…and it just so happen I found this trick here user “spider” to save threads!.. So I put my little spidy to use. But instead of using scraps, I use my Scrap Vomit 2.5″ squares. Which means I am piecing two quilt top at the same time..It totally saves a ton of thread and no more mess with threads lying around the carpet floor too! Such a great method..

Well yesterday I said I want to share my modern baby quilt today, well its done, but I wanna take better photo. So I’ll do that first and do another post okay..

Till then, Have a great week ahead! It’s Labour Day on Monday here in Australia – so it’s a long weekend.. but it felt short – yikes today is already the last day of September!

Hi!

I finished my first Emmaline Bag. I say its the first as I do have plan to make more..Love it.. The instruction were clear and makes everything so smooth and easy!

Emmaline Bag Done

Lately I have not been a fan of large bag since I like to stuff things in my handbags, the bigger it is the more things I put in – which really is unnecessary.. but since this bag is done, I think I might turn my head around again for large bags.. LOL

Ooo and that knit books – I plan to start learning how to knit..and socks too.. aren’t I being too ambitious.. LOL..

Emmaline Bag Done 2

I made this bag using a corduroy fabric I bought during one of the thrift trip.. It was just enough to make this bag. though it was a medium weight fabric, I sewed my Emmaline bag with fusible fleece anyway. The interior is by Michael Miller, Dumb Dot Citron. I love it. Bright and cheery..

Well, apart from that, a friend of mine just gave birth to a boy and I decided to whip up a quick modern quilt.. I am almost done with it, but today I’ll be sharing a sneak peek. Will post a whole quilt photo tomorrow..

w.i.p modern baby quilt

Oh yes, and I have been playing with a cute fox … Love this organic cotton and design from Monaluna. I got my set of Monaluna Fox Hollow bundle at fabricworm. Fabulous!

Tried a concentric circle quilting with a walking foot too. Thanks to this tutorial.

Well, I guess that’s it for today.

Hi!

I finish sashing my blocks for the Vintage Modern Heart Quilt and decided to use red squares in between vertical and horizontal sashes. Red seems to be the right choice to finish it up I think.

Vintage modern heart quilt pieced top

I love it – it look so girlish and even made my son look a bit girly on top of it.. but the quilts not for him, which is good – he need to look boyish as he is.

Hm, I tried taking the whole quilt top but in our tiny apartment is a bit hard.. and my little guy is helping too..

Vintage modern heart quilt pieced top_2
Vintage modern heart quilt pieced top_3

Well, to tell you the truth, the quilt top is not yet done. I need to do a border and I am thinking of scallops.. It would make the quilt even soft and sort of girlish. Besides, I would love to try scallop edges…but.. I ran out of the white fabric and wadding – and my next budget of fabrics is not until November as we are on seriously tight budget (need some money for travelling back to Malaysia for a three weeks break in October).. So, this will be an UFO for a while I guess.

Do you have a quilt that is just about to be done, but you ran out of something for it? Would you go straight and buy it or would you keep the project as an UFO?

Well, happy sharing with you guys!

XOXO
