I’ve been working on the Designer Mystery 2023 quilt — Fat Quarter Shop’s long-running and beloved mystery BOM program. This quilt project has taken me a little longer than planned because I kept contemplating different layout ideas. Part of me wanted to redesign it entirely, but since I had already cut most of the finishing pieces, I eventually decided to stick with the provided layout and just tweak it slightly to match my style. Sometimes the best thing is to keep going at your own pace, enjoy the process, and let the quilt evolve naturally.

One thing I’ve loved about this quilt from the very beginning is the fabric. Camille Roskelley has always been one of my favorite designers, and this collection is absolutely gorgeous. Every finished block feels like a joy and I simply enjoyed them individually, and when placed together, it’s shaping up to be a truly beautiful quilt. The quilt measures generously once completed, and I already know this will be one of those quilts I treasure for years.

Curious how my Designer Mystery 2023 is coming together and why BOM programs are perfect for your next quilt? Continue to read the full story below:

What Is the Designer Mystery Quilt?

If you’re new to the quilting world or wondering what the excitement is all about, the Designer Mystery Quilt by Fat Quarter Shop is one of the most popular annual block of the month programs available. Each year, the team reveals a new theme for the program, and the blocks are kept a secret until the monthly shipment arrives. It’s truly a beautiful sampler quilt experience, where you get:

✨ A monthly block pattern
✨ A curated fabric kit
✨ Access to a fabric key, layout guide, and finishing instructions
✨ A surprise block of the month quilt pattern you won’t see anywhere else

The entire program typically runs for a full year, making it ideal for quilters who love sewing consistently without feeling rushed. And if you want to join next year’s theme, Fat Quarter Shop has already opened reservations for the upcoming Designer Mystery Quilt — perfect for anyone wanting to dive into a fresh BOM quilt in 2026.

My favorite about this BOM is the finishing kit with the beautiful box that it comes in! Definitely something collectible.  Plus, the fabric provided by FQS is very generous allowing rooms for mistakes and even a second quilt!

Why Block of the Month Quilt Programs Are So Popular

Whether it’s the Designer Mystery, a seasonal BOM, or a collection-based BOM like fig tree quilts, quilters love block of the month quilt programs for so many reasons. I’ve joined multiple over the years, and I always come back to them because they’re truly one of the best ways to stay inspired throughout the year.

1. You Sew at Your Own Pace

Every month you receive a portion of your quilt, which keeps the workload light and enjoyable. For busy quilters, parents, full-time workers, or anyone juggling multiple projects, it’s a great way to keep progressing without overwhelm.

2. A Built-In Quilting Community

Many quilt shops and online communities run block of the month clubs (or BOM club) where you can share progress, learn new techniques, or just enjoy seeing how others interpret the same pattern.

3. Mystery + Motivation

There’s something magical about sewing a block without knowing exactly how the completed quilt will look. A mystery BOM adds a sense of fun, and each reveal feels like opening a little gift.

4. High-Quality Fabric & Expert-Curated Kits

Many block of the month quilt kits include top-quality fabrics from well-loved designers such as Lori Holt fabrics, Camille Roskelley, fig tree quilts. When you subscribe, you know you’re getting coordinated fabrics that will work beautifully together from the first month to the last.

5. Perfect for All Skill Levels

Most BOMs are designed with a range of quilters in mind. Many are ideal for advanced beginner level and above, though quilt shops often offer a block of the month class if you want guidance.

Different Types of Block of the Month Quilt Kits

If you’re considering joining a BOM, here are some types of block of the month subscriptions you’ll come across:

1. Traditional Sampler BOM

These are perfect if you love variety. Each block uses different piecing techniques, allowing you to learn new skills.

2. Themed BOM

Some programs revolve around a year’s theme — perhaps seasonal, farmhouse, holiday-inspired, or centered around a fabric designer.

3. Fabric-First BOM

If you often fall in love with collections (hello, Lori Holt fabrics lovers!), you may prefer BOMs where the fabrics are the main attraction.

4. Modern & Minimalistic BOM

For those who love bold, clean designs, many quilt shops offer monthly programs featuring simple blocks with high visual impact.

5. Designer Mystery Style BOM

This is where each block is a surprise. Ideal if you love monthly surprises and want a gorgeous quilt at the end of the program.

How BOM Quilt Programs Work

Most block of the month quilt kits work the same way:

  1. You sign up and often pay a first month reservation fee.
  2. Each month, you’re charged a monthly fee.
  3. A monthly shipment is mailed to you containing:
    • Fabric cuts
    • Pattern for the month
    • Instructions and fabric placement guide

Some programs also include free shipping within certain regions or offer reduced international shipping rates.

At the end of the program, you’ll receive the finishing kit and borders. Sometimes, the finished size or quilt measuresdetails are revealed only at the end!

My Experience with Designer Mystery 2023

Back to my own quilt — I’m now working through the finishing stage of the Designer Mystery 2023. Although I initially wanted to change the layout, I stayed close to the original because all the pieces were already cut. And honestly, I’m so glad I did. The layout showcases the blocks beautifully, and the fabric choices are breathtaking.

I love how a BOM forces me to slow down and appreciate each block. It’s like unwrapping a monthly gift to myself. And now that my quilt top is nearly complete, I can finally see how all the pieces come together.

I’m hoping to quilt it soon — maybe with loops or simple free-motion quilting that won’t distract from Camille’s artwork in the fabrics.

Tips for Choosing the Best Block of the Month Quilt Patterns & Kits

Here are a few things I always look for:

  • Check the Skill Level – Most BOMs say if they’re suitable for beginners or advanced beginners.
  • Look at Current Promotions – Check for clearance items, early-bird discounts, or special offers. BOMs vary widely in price, and some reach the highest price range depending on fabric collection.
  • Study the Fabric Key – A strong fabric key ensures consistent fabric placement, especially important for samplers.
  • Check Shipping Info – Some programs offer free shipping, especially within the United Kingdom or the U.S.
  • Consider the Entire Program – Make sure you’re ready to commit to a full year if required.

A BOM quilt is one of the best ways to stay inspired and motivated.

I’m already dreaming about my next quilt, and I have a feeling it might be another BOM. There’s just something about the structure, the surprise, and the joy of watching the quilt grow one month at a time.
