Hi!

For those waiting for the About A Quilt Sampler QAL post, I have to say very sorry as I have forgotten to upload the photo of the block tutorial to flickr before I left Canberra. I will get to it before the month ends with the quilting too.

Currently I am back in Malaysia. Visiting my father in law who is still in coma. He is stable and is currently being treated at home. We are praying for his strength to recover and for my mother in law to be as strong to go through this difficult time. Your wishes and prayers are most welcome and appreciated.

Before leaving Canberra, I did manage to get the quilt for my mother in law done. I am getting it hung up in the room where my father in law is staying in. It is fairly a small quilt, but a good size for a wallhanging.

I started this quilt back in 2012 and procrastinate in getting it done. But I am glad it is all bound and ready to

be hung now.

Anna Bella HST Quilt Done + Quilting Video

Hi!

Finally after hours of quilting this quilt and spamming photos of it in the instagram (I am amira_littlemushroomcap on IG), the quilt is finally done!

This quilt is a gift for my mother, hence the fabrics was bought to match her taste and home. The fabric line is called Anna Bella by Marcus Fabrics. I posted a blogpost when the fabric arrived here. Blogpost on the progress of the quilt here and here.

I know my mother would certainly love a sampler quilt, so I decided to make the HST sampler quilt from In Color Order’s Tutorial.

The quilting was mostly feathers because I wanted to practice feather quilting. I started quilting the blocks, so even though I did have some ugly feathers there, it is not so obvious. Pretty clever ha?

Once I have done all the blocks, I did the sashing. which was ….. totally wrong!

Should have consider quilting from the center towards the outside/border because the quilt backing keeps bulging around in between quilted blocks. It’s okay. Lesson learnt.

I was finally confident with my feathers and decide to go for the feather border. I am pretty please with the end results having it was quilted on a regular domestic machine with no stitch regulator.

Here is a video of me quilting it. If you are interested in quilting feathers yourself on a domestic machine, probably you can get a few things from the video. Please pardon my grammar and english – it is not my first language and spontaneously talking is one thing I am not very good at. Huhu.

Sorry – it is my first time doing a video! And NO editing!!! and it is dark – of course, its winter here down under.. AND sorry you have to go through me with the seam ripper part too! Hehe. I am hoping to improve soon so I can share better.

Hi!

Finally I get to show you what I made for the Make it Right challenge! (update:this challenge has passed June 2013)

When I got the fabric, I just know that I don’t want to make it into a quilt. I just want to think a bit out of the box. Indeed I did – and when I want to submit it, I was thinking “hm… which category should it be in? Quilt? Apparel or Home Deco?” Finally I submit it into Home Deco.

Anyway, I made this because the car seat is dull and of course I need to sew something to cheer it up!

And just because I made the backing as nice, I made it reversible too! The improved piecing is the back. Even the back pocket panel can be reversible!

Then comes a bit of marking here and there with pilot Frixion.

All quilting was done on my . Bunnings (hardware store here in Australia) Glove works as good as machinger’s glove and cost only 1/3 of machinger! And the colour is blue!

The ruler story : I do not change foot while quilting this despite of many straight lines, because I can’t be that patience! LOL.. I find this Fine LIne Quilter’s Ruler helpful to use on domestic machine, but sometimes foot can jump over it too! talk about dangerous (imagine the needle snapping on it)..you can find the ruler HERE > if you are interested.

Update: I love the ruler now that I can use it with my non-hopping foot!

Quilted with double layer of bamboo batting for extra stiffness and puffy quilting

Hi!

So, today I want to just give a brief

Quilt As You Go (QAYG) Introduction.

There are many ways of QAYG, you can see some tutorial here,here and here.

But the one we are going to use in this QAL is basically,

Quilting block by block.

Trim the batting and the backing off.

Attach the sashing fabrics for the top and the back.

Slit in strip of batting in the sashing.

And finish it off by hand or machine.

The detail of all of this steps, will be in a complete tutorial when the time comes (October).

Today, I just want you to have a general idea of how we are going about to do this quilt.

Other Requirements

So, since we will be quilting as we go, we will also need to prepare the backing fabrics as we start.

You can use various fabric for backing, and one colour sashing like this:

(you’ll need 9 pieces of 13.5″ square, 1 yard of sashing fabric)

Or all the same for all blocks and another colour sashing.

(you’ll need 1.5 yards for the blocks and 1 yard for sashing)

Other things you will need:

Quilting threads – either one colour or various – matching to your fabrics

9 piece of 13″ square batting and 2.5 Strips of batting (start collecting scrap batting about that size from now or you can always cut the strips from the large batting piece anyway)

Free-Motion foot

Walking Foot

Standard Quilting Tools

An advantage if you have Supreme Slider and Machinger Gloves but not necessary

Cupcake Wallhanging Quilt

In the intervals of larger projects, it is always nice to have some of those little quilts finished.

I made this wallhanging to get the hang of machine quilting – thus explaining why such a large negative space.

With this project as well, I learned how to do raw-edge applique.

It is always nice to learn a couple of things and brushing up the skills while finishing up a small project.

Such a great way to get instant gratification wouldn’t you agree?

Machine quilting is quite addictive but it takes a while to get used to as well and a lot of patience. This little quilt took me quite some time to be finished. But finally I did it.

The best part is the binding part. This time I tried the tutorial here. I love the output of having no stitches showing up from the front side, but it takes a lot of care to make sure that it looks neat on the back as well.

So, in total this little quilt is for me to practice raw applique, machine quilt and binding! That’s why I love little quilt projects!
