I’m popping in today to share my latest finish—and I’m extra excited about this one. It’s the Prairie Pastures Runner from The Prairie Home Quilt Book by Lori Holt by the ever-so-lovely Lori Holt (published by It’s Sew Emma). If you haven’t flipped through this book yet, let me just say—it’s like stepping into a candy store for quilters! Bright colors, cheerful blocks, and project after project that makes you want to drop everything and head straight to your sewing machine.

The Prairie Home Quilt Book by Lori Holt
This book is honestly packed with delightful sewing ideas—I can already tell it’s going to be one of those books I keep returning to. In fact, I’m planning to work through a few more projects from it and turn it into a little blog series. So, stay tuned for more quilty goodness from these cheerful pages!
Piecing the Prairie Pastures Runner
Let’s talk about the Prairie Pastures Runner, my first finish from the book. Oh, what a joy it was to sew! I actually recorded a “sew-with-me” video a few months ago when I was piecing the blocks, and working on it again now just brought back all the cozy vibes.
For this project, I’m using Charm Pack from the Calico Collection by Lori Holt for Riley Blake Designs that I got from one of my older Sew Sampler Box. I love using the fabrics for other projects if I didn’t make the project that came with it. And this project surely did not disappoint!

Free Motion Quilting Allover Zig Zag
Once I finished the top, I dove right into quilting. I went with a fun zigzag free motion design—super playful and it echoed the lively feel of the patchwork beautifully. And since it’s a runner (not too big!), the quilting went by pretty quickly. Win!
The Binding Dilemma + Binding Tip
Then came the binding conundrum…
I had pieced the runner using Calico by Lori Holt—a charm pack I received in one of the Sew Sampler Boxes—but I didn’t have any yardage from the same line. And since I’m really trying to shop my stash first before buying anything new, I went digging. (You know the feeling… the “I know I’ve got something that will work” moment!)
A Helpful Tip from Kaffe Fassett
While auditioning fabrics, I came across Kate from the Last Homely House’s recent vlog HERE>, and this a tip from the legendary Kaffe Fassett—to choose a binding that stands out in a busy quilt. The example in the quilt made by Kate suited the chosen binding which was black spotted fabric. That made me think of the times I’ve loved using stripes—especially black and white—for bindings. But this time, I felt like a bold choice might compete too much with the already bright and happy blocks.
I almost went with orange… but it felt a little too loud. In the end, I chose a soft, earthy brown that pulled from the light text background prints. It’s subtle, grounding, and I think it lets the patchwork shine without overwhelming the piece. Plus, I didn’t have any stripes or dots that felt quite right—so going subtle really felt like the right call.
Final Thoughts & What’s Next
And now, it’s all finished—and I couldn’t be happier with how it turned out! It is a little large for my table, hence I’m stashing it as a gift for someone lucky!
If you’re looking for a project that’s joyful to piece, quick to quilt, and just a whole lot of fun to make, I highly recommend this runner. And really, the whole book is such a treat. Totally worth it—so many patterns, so many possibilities.
Can’t wait to start on the next one!
