The finish of The Scrappy Trip Quilt 2.

Scrappy Trip Quilt 2, because my first one was completed long ago HERE>.

First quilt of the year 2019 to complete. I guess this quilt should have been the last one in year 2018, but procrastination wins over and when I had just a tad bit more to quilt, we decided to rearrange the sewing room to fit in the kid’s bed.

Since we currently only have two bedroom, the sewing room now is shared with the kids, and though it sounds weird and possibly dangerous, the kids are settling well in the room and I had to give up my wee early morning sewing as my kids are still asleep when I usually do so.

There’ll be a sewing room one day but that is for another story.

Today I’ll share with you the finish of this quilt which I previously talked about HERE>

I took it to the gumtree forest and took some photos there.

This quilt is made from my 2.5″ strip stash.

I had fun piecing the strips together randomly and seeing the strips being cut into smaller strip set after piecing is just so much fun. I used for this and it was so much fun.

You can read more about the process of piecing the blocks together HERE>.

You can read more how to make this Trip Around The World block using this tutorial.

With the idea of getting 5 x 5 block set up for a quilt, I kept on piecing until I got enough blocks.

Free Motion Quilting

I knew I wanted a simple all-over quilting design so I opt for my favourite quick finish loop-de-loop design.

Using the technique and pathway of quilting as shown in this post HERE> , I got it done without any fold or pleats at the front or back of the quilt. You know that feeling if you’re a free motion quilter on a domestic machine.

The backing was simply a single fabric pieced in the centre matching the prints. A new thing I tried. Which was interesting to put together.

I used this tutorial  to piece together backing fabrics and match the patterns!

I am not a big fan of the texture of loop de loop design, but it does the purpose of quilting the three layers well and I can say that this is definitely one of the fastest design apart from large stippling.

Besides, with such a scrappy quilt, the design doesn’t really matter —- which makes it a great time for practicing fmq!!

I can make mistake and no one (not even me sometimes) notice the mistake once it is all done! I get to practice on a larger scale and do lots of good fmq.

If you have been thinking about practicing, try a scrappy quilt – when working on it, you will see it fine cause you’re close to it. If it is not just at the level you’re proud to make it so obvious, a scrappy quilt is surely to hide it.

Scrappy Trip Quilt

Next time I’m doing the large scrappy trip, The trip around the world Quilt. But I’m not sure whether that’ll will be enough from small scraps. Maybe I can collect similar colours to complete a whole round. We’ll see.

Have you made a scrappy trip quilt before?

  1. I have a Janome like you and love it. I also love receiving your notices (is that whst it’s called?) I am 72 and started quilting 3 years ago.

  2. I like to see all the ways blocks can be made. To explore a wide range of blocks and improve my accuracy; I am doing the 365 Challenge which is making a block that is only 3″ everyday of the year. Each day I am sent an e-mail with the block of the day. Every block is different and some are very challenging. This is a good way to use your stash. I will end up with a good sized bed quilt at a small cost.

  3. Thank you for your tips on organizing scraps! I really need to start cutting and sorting my scraps. They are about to move me out of my sewing room. Also I like the way you showed the quilt trip plan using scraps. Its very colorful and a great way to use them up. Thank you for your emails
